The 28-Day Billing Trap: Why Your Storage Container Costs More Than the Price You Were Quoted

You call around for a portable storage container in Reno or Carson City. One company quotes $280. Another quotes $250. You pick the cheaper one, and a year later you have paid more than if you had gone with the higher number.

The difference is not a hidden fee or a surcharge buried in the fine print. It is the billing cycle, and it is sitting in plain sight on the price page if you know to look for it.

Twenty-Eight Days Is Not a Month

A significant share of portable storage companies, including providers serving Northern Nevada, bill on a 28-day cycle rather than a calendar month. The rate is printed next to an asterisk that says something like billed on a 28-day basis, and most people read straight past it.

Here is why that asterisk matters. There are 365 days in a year. Divide by 28 and you get 13.04 billing periods. A calendar month cycle gives you 12. So a 28-day cycle generates one extra bill every single year, for the same container, sitting in the same driveway.

The short version: a "monthly" rate billed every 28 days is not a monthly rate. You will be invoiced 13 times in 12 months.

What That Looks Like in Dollars

Take a 20-foot container quoted at $280 per 28 days — a real published rate in this market at the time of writing. Compare it to a 20-foot container at $250 per calendar month:

$280 per 28 days$250 per month
Bills in one year1312
Annual cost$3,650$3,000
Difference over one year+$650—

Six hundred and fifty dollars. On a container you are renting precisely because you are trying to control costs during a move or a remodel.

And note what happened to the comparison. The $280 rate looked like it was $30 more per month. Over a year it is actually $54 more per month in real terms, because of the thirteenth bill.

Why Companies Do It

To be fair, there is a legitimate operational reason. A 28-day cycle is exactly four weeks, which makes route scheduling, driver dispatch, and invoicing land on the same weekday every time. For a logistics business, that is genuinely tidy.

But the customer-facing effect is that the headline rate reads lower than the annual cost, and almost nobody does the division at the quote stage. Whether that is a convenience or a pricing tactic depends on how clearly it is disclosed. Our view is simple: if a rate requires an asterisk and long division to understand, it is not transparent pricing.

The Other Numbers Worth Checking

Billing cycle is the big one, but it is not the only place a quote drifts from what you actually pay. Before you book with anyone in Northern Nevada, get these in writing:

Delivery Radius, Not Just Delivery Fee

A $85 delivery fee within 15 miles and an $80 delivery fee within 20 miles are not the same offer. If you are in Dayton, Minden, or out toward Fernley, the radius decides whether you pay mileage on top. Ask where the radius is measured from — a yard on one side of town can put you outside the circle while a competitor across the valley has you inside it.

Card Processing Fees

Some providers add a processing fee for paying by credit card. It is usually small — around $5 — but it recurs with every bill. On a 28-day cycle, that is 13 of them.

Damage Waiver

Most companies charge a damage waiver of around $15 per period to cover the container itself while it is in your possession. Check whether it is quoted per month or per 28 days, same as the rent, and whether it is included in the headline rate or added after.

Locks

Some yards sell you a lock for around $17. Others let you bring your own. Minor, but it belongs in the comparison.

Weight Limits and Overweight Fees

Nevada and California DOT rules mean loaded containers get weighed before transport. Most providers cap contents around 7,000 pounds and charge overweight fees past a hard limit. This is not a gotcha — it is the law — but you want the number before you start loading, not after.

How to Compare Two Quotes Properly

Ignore the headline rate. Build the annual number instead:

  • Ask directly: "Is that per calendar month or per 28 days?"
  • If 28 days, multiply the rate by 13, not 12.
  • Add delivery and pickup — both, since pickup is a separate charge almost everywhere.
  • Add the damage waiver times the number of billing periods.
  • Add any card processing fee times the number of billing periods.
  • Confirm your address is inside the standard radius, or get the mileage charge quoted up front.

Now you have two numbers you can actually compare. In our experience the ranking often flips.

Where A to B Stands

We bill by the calendar month. Twelve bills a year, not thirteen. Our 20-foot container is $250 per month and our 8-foot is $160 per month, with delivery from $80 within 20 miles of Mound House and a $15 monthly damage waiver included in every rental.

No payment is collected when you reserve. You get an invoice, you confirm your delivery date with a person on the phone, and you are billed monthly until you tell us you are finished. There is no contract and no early termination penalty.

A 20-foot container with us runs $3,000 for a full year. The same size billed at $280 per 28 days runs about $3,650.

We would rather you check that math than take our word for it.

If you are comparing us against someone else, do the division. If their annual number beats ours, take their deal — you should. But do the division first.

Questions about what your specific situation would cost? See our full pricing, or call us and we will walk through the annual number with you, including mileage if you are outside the standard radius.
